If you’ve been thinking about booking an in-home family photographer in Buffalo NY but you’re not sure what the process actually looks like β this is the post for you. πΈ
I hear a version of the same thing from almost every family before they book: I’ve never done anything like this before. I don’t really know what to expect. And that’s completely fair. In-home documentary photography is genuinely different from the kind of session most people have experienced β no park, no coordinated outfits, no one telling you where to stand. So before you reach out, I want to walk you through exactly what happens, from the moment you inquire to the moment your gallery lands in your inbox.
No surprises. Just the whole picture.
Step 1: You Reach Out (And I Actually Write Back)
Most families find me through Facebook β a post in a local group, something a friend shared, or a reel that stopped them mid-scroll. Some find me through Google. However you get here, the first step is just reaching out.
You can do that through the contact form on my website, through a Facebook message, or by grabbing a spot on my scheduler directly. Once I hear from you, I’ll send you all the details about my in-home family sessions β packages, pricing, availability β and we’ll figure out if we’re a good fit.
I only book sessions Friday through Tuesday, which works really well for families whose weekdays are chaotic. If you’re a sports family with an unpredictable schedule, that’s actually one of the reasons families like mine tend to love working with me. I get it because I live it. π

Step 2: We Lock In Your Date
Once you decide to move forward, you’ll receive a contract, an invoice, and a short questionnaire to officially reserve your spot. A $200 non-refundable creative fee holds your date, with the remainder due the day of your session. Payment plan options are available if you need them β just ask.
This part is handled through HoneyBook, so it’s all in one place and easy to sign and pay from your phone. Nothing complicated.
Step 3: You Fill Out Your Questionnaire
Two to four weeks before your session, I’ll send you a questionnaire. This is genuinely one of my favorite parts of the process and I want you to take it seriously β not because it’s a lot of work, but because the more you put into it, the more I get out of it.
I’m asking about your family. Your rhythms. What your kids are like right now. What your mornings look like. What makes your household yours. The questionnaire is how I train my eyes before I ever walk through your door. The families who give me the most detail get the most from their session, every single time.

Step 4: We Have a Consultation Call
Before your session, we’ll get on a call β spouses welcome, kids absolutely allowed to run in the background. This is where we talk through everything: what activities feel natural for your family, what you’re hoping to capture, any questions you have, and what the day is going to look like.
For families booking a Keepsake Family Film, this call is especially important because we’re planning around your family’s actual routines, not manufactured ones. I want to know how your Saturday mornings actually go. Not what you think sounds good β what you actually do. That’s the stuff that makes a great film. (If you’re curious about the difference between a photo session and a family film, I break that down in my post onΒ what a documentary family film actually is.
Step 5: Session Day β Just Be Your Family
This is the part most people are nervous about and the part that ends up being their favorite. π
I arrive and spend a little time just saying hi, getting comfortable, letting your kids get used to me being around. And then I just start. There’s no posing. There’s no “okay everyone gather over here.” I’m watching, I’m moving through your space, and I’m finding the story that’s already happening.
Your house doesn’t need to be clean. I genuinely mean this β a lived-in home is a loved home and that’s exactly what your photos should look like. Toys on the floor are fine. Dishes in the sink are fine. The laundry on the couch is fine. Real life is the point.
The first twenty minutes or so, everyone’s usually a little stiff. That’s normal and expected. By the halfway point, most families have completely forgotten I’m there β and that’s when the magic happens. I’ll occasionally offer light direction to get you into a natural activity (“hey, want to go make a snack together?”) but it’s always something you’d do anyway, never something staged.

Step 6: I Handle Everything After
After your session, I go to work. I comb through everything we captured, choose the strongest moments, edit your images to bring out the warmth and light of your home, and put together a gallery that tells the story of your family right now.
Photo delivery is four weeks. If you’ve also booked a family film, film delivery is eight weeks β filmmaking takes considerably more time than photography, and I’m not going to rush something you’re going to watch for the rest of your life.
You’ll receive your gallery via a private online link where you can download your images, share them with family, and order prints. I want these photos to actually make it onto your walls, not just sit in a folder on your computer β so prints and products are available right through your gallery.

Who This Is Really For
I want to be honest with you about who gets the most out of an in-home session.
The families I work with tend to be the ones who feel like they’ve been told their situation is “too hard” to photograph. Too many kids. Too much energy. Too small a house. Too busy a schedule. Those are exactly the families I love most. I’ve worked with newborns and teenagers and every age in between, in houses that were spotless and houses that were absolutely not, with kids who were completely delightful and kids who were having a day β and I have never once left without something beautiful.
You don’t need to be a photogenic family. You don’t need to have it together. You just need to be willing to let me come in and see what’s already there. In my experience, what’s already there is always more than enough. π€
Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance do I need to book an in-home family session?
It depends on the time of year. Fall (September and October) books fastest β sometimes weeks out. Summer and winter tend to have more flexibility. That said, I work with last-minute families regularly. If you see availability posted, grab it β I post open spots every Sunday and they go quickly.
Do I need to clean my house before the session?
No. Please don’t spend your morning stressed about this. A house that looks lived-in tells the truth about your family, and that’s exactly what we’re going for. If you feel better doing a quick tidy, go ahead β but I promise it doesn’t affect your photos.
What should we wear?
We talk through this on your consultation call, and I’ll give you specific guidance based on your home and your family’s style. The short version: choose clothes you love and feel comfortable in, slightly elevated from everyday but nothing stiff or formal. Avoid busy patterns. Don’t stress about matching perfectly β coordinating is better than matching anyway.
What if my kids won’t cooperate?
They never cooperate at first β and that’s fine. I have never had a session where the kids were “too much.” I specialize in real family life, which means I specialize in kids who are being kids. Give it twenty minutes and something always shifts.
Do you only shoot in-home?
My in-home sessions are my primary offering because that’s where real family life happens. That said, the Full Family Experience package includes the option to add a favorite community location if you want a mix of both.
Can I book just a film without photos?
My Keepsake Family Film includes both β a 4β5 minute cinematic film and 40 photos β because the two work beautifully together. Read more about what that looks like here β link to Post 2.
