Last week, a mom reached out to me with a confession: “I’m so tired of forcing my kids to smile for pictures. Can family photos actually be… fun?”
Yes. The answer is absolutely yes.
If you’ve ever felt that knot in your stomach before a family photo session… the stress of coordinating outfits, bribing children to cooperate, worrying about whether your house is clean enough; I want you to know there’s a completely different way. A documentary family session isn’t about performance or perfection. It’s about capturing your family exactly as you are, in this fleeting moment, without all the pressure.
But what actually happens during a documentary family session? If you’re a Buffalo family considering this style of photography for the first time, let me walk you through the entire experience from our first conversation to the moment your gallery lands in your inbox.

Why Documentary Family Sessions Feel Different
Traditional photography sessions often feel like performance art. Line up here, smile on command, hold that pose while everyone gets increasingly cranky. It’s exhausting, especially with young children who just want to move and play and be themselves.
A documentary family session flips that script entirely. Instead of posing your family, I capture you being yourselves. The messy kitchen during after-dinner treat baking. The mismatched pajamas at story time. The way your toddler helps mix the batter with fierce concentration. The joyful connections that make your family uniquely yours.
The result? Photos that actually feel like your family… not some idealized version, but the real, beautiful truth of your everyday life together.

The Complete Documentary Family Session Timeline
Step 1: Initial Inquiry (You’re Here!)
When you first reach out about a documentary family session, I’ll send you all the details about my services, packages, and current availability. If we seem like a perfect fit—if you’re nodding along thinking “yes, this is exactly what we need”—you’ll receive a contract, invoice, and a short questionnaire to reserve your date.
This questionnaire isn’t just paperwork. It’s the beginning of me getting to know your family’s unique story.
Step 2: The Questionnaire (Two to Four Weeks Before Your Session)
About two weeks before your documentary family session, I’ll email you a detailed questionnaire. I know it might seem like homework, but this is actually one of the most powerful parts of our process together.
The more detail you provide, the better I understand what matters most to your family. What makes your children light up? What routines do you cherish right now? What are you most nostalgic about in this season of family life?
Think of it as training my eyes and heart to see your family the way you do… to notice the little details you’ll want to remember forever.

Step 3: Pre-Session Planning Call (Two to Four Weeks Before)
Before your documentary family session, we’ll schedule a call to get acquainted. This is one of my favorite parts of the entire process because I get to meet your family (even if it’s just over Zoom).
I encourage spouses and partners to join. Kids are welcome to pop in and say hi before they inevitably run off to play. During this call, we’ll discuss:
- Your goals for the session and any must-have moments
- Activities you want to include (baking together, bedtime stories, playing in the backyard, Saturday morning pancake rituals)
- Timing and location options
- Wardrobe suggestions that feel authentic to your family
- Any concerns or questions you might have
And here’s what we won’t discuss: making your house spotless or finding the “perfect” outfits. Because documentary family sessions aren’t about perfection… they’re about presence.
What Happens on Session Day
The First 30 Minutes: The Warm-Up Period
Here’s something most photographers won’t tell you: the first 30 minutes of any documentary family session are essentially a warm-up period.
When I arrive at your home, your family will likely feel a bit camera-conscious. Kids might act shy or silly. Your partner might feel awkward. You might suddenly become hyperaware of that pile of laundry in the corner (which, by the way, I won’t focus on unless it’s part of a sweet moment you’re sharing).
This is completely normal and expected.
This is exactly why I never book documentary family sessions shorter than 1.5 hours. This photography style needs time to unfold naturally. As your family settles into your activities (whether that’s prepping tomorrow’s breakfast muffins, reading books on the couch, or playing soccer in the backyard) everyone gradually forgets about the camera.
That’s when the real magic happens. When your toddler stops performing and starts actually helping you stir. When your older child gets absorbed in the story you’re reading. When the genuine laughter and connection emerge.

How I Work During Your Documentary Family Session
Think of me as a friend or family member who happens to have brought her camera along. I’ll be there documenting your day, but in a way that feels natural and unobtrusive.
My approach is very relaxed and observational, as opposed to traditional and directed. It’s not about getting the perfect photos, or everything being just right. It’s not about everyone looking happy all the time, or wearing incredible outfits.
My work consists of real moments. Real life. Real stories. It celebrates both the joys and the struggles of parenthood.
There will be times when I give you gentle guidance, “Hey, why don’t you hang out in the kitchen while you prep those muffins” or “Let’s move over here where the light is beautiful”, but I’ll never ask you to force smiles or hold uncomfortable poses.
You can think of me like a friend or family member coming to hang out, who happened to bring along her camera. There will be times when I give you guidance, for example I might ask you to hang out in a certain area because it has the best light, or I might suggest we move on from an activity once I know I’ve captured plenty of footage and photos from it. But the flow of the session is very loose and relaxed, and child-led at all times.

Different Session Lengths Tell Different Stories
Depending on which package you choose for your documentary family session, we’ll have different amounts of time to capture your story:
The Classic Family Session (1.5 hours): Perfect for capturing your family in one setting—either your home or an outdoor location during Buffalo’s gorgeous golden hour. This gives us enough time to move past the warm-up phase and capture authentic moments as they unfold.
The Full Family Experience (3 hours): More time means we can split between your home and a favorite community location, capturing a wider range of your family’s personality and daily life. Maybe we start with homework and snack time at home, then head to your favorite park.
The Ultimate Family Story (6 hours): This is a true day-in-the-life documentary family session. We’ll cover multiple activities and locations across up to three settings, telling your complete family story from morning routines to evening rituals.
Golden Hour Sessions in Buffalo
If you choose an outdoor documentary family session or a combined indoor/outdoor experience, we’ll schedule during the golden hour… that magical time right before sunset when the light is warm, soft, and absolutely gorgeous.
Buffalo’s golden hour is particularly beautiful, whether we’re at Delaware Park, along the waterfront, or in your own backyard. This timing ensures your photos have that warm, nostalgic glow while also being flattering for everyone. No harsh shadows, no squinty eyes… just beautiful, even light that makes everything look like a dream.

After Your Documentary Family Session: Behind the Scenes
The Editing Process
After we wrap up your documentary family session, the real work begins on my end. I carefully go through every image, selecting the most emotional and authentic moments from our time together. Then I edit each photo individually to enhance the natural lighting while maintaining a timeless, authentic look.
This isn’t about heavy filters or making everything look “perfect.” It’s about bringing out the warmth, connection, and genuine emotion that was already there. Your images will be enhanced to bring out the beautiful golden-hour lighting (for outdoor sessions) while maintaining a natural, timeless aesthetic.
Timeline for Your Documentary Family Session Delivery:
- Photo galleries: Delivered within 3-4 weeks
- Film sessions: Films take longer (about 8 weeks) because they require 15-20+ hours of creation, plus additional time to find the perfect licensed music to tell your story
Receiving Your Gallery
You’ll receive an email with your online gallery link, where you can:
- View all your high-resolution images from your documentary family session
- Download your photos immediately
- Share your gallery with family and friends
- Order professional prints, canvas displays, and albums sourced from the best print labs in the US
Important: Please download your images right away and save them in multiple locations, including cloud storage. I recommend copying them to at least three additional locations, with one of those being a cloud server or somewhere you’ll have access to that isn’t your home (in case of fire or flood).

Preparing for Your Documentary Family Session: The Questions Everyone Asks
“Do I need to clean my house for our documentary family session?”
No! Please don’t stress about this. Your home exactly as it is becomes the perfect backdrop for authentic family moments in your documentary family session.
There’s no need to clean or prepare. Your home exactly as it is, becomes the perfect backdrop for authentic family moments. Those toys on the floor during playtime, the homework spread across the kitchen table, the lived-in look… that’s real life, and that’s what makes these photos meaningful years from now.
“What should we wear?”
Choose clothes you love and feel good in. Think slightly elevated from what you’d normally wear, but nothing dressy or constricting. Most of all, don’t stress this. Your connection as a family will speak louder than your wardrobe.
Please choose clothes you feel comfortable and confident in. Maybe slightly elevated from what you’d normally wear, but nothing dressy or constricting. Consider some coordination across the family… not matching exactly, but complementary colors and styles.
Feel free to send me photos of what you’re thinking of wearing and I can help you decide what will look good on camera. I’ll also send you a detailed prep guide with wardrobe suggestions.

“What if my kids don’t cooperate during our documentary family session?”
This is the beauty of documentary family photography… there’s no “cooperating” required!
If your toddler wants to run around instead of sitting still, we’ll capture that energy and joy. If your preschooler gets absorbed in playing with blocks, that concentration is beautiful to document. If someone has a meltdown (it happens!), we can take breaks, or sometimes the way you comfort your child becomes one of the most tender moments of the entire session.
The goal of a documentary family session isn’t to make your children perform. It’s to document who they actually are at this moment in their lives… the wild imagination, the favorite pajamas they insist on wearing, the way they light up during certain activities.
“What if the weather is bad?”
For outdoor documentary family sessions in Buffalo, I always check the forecast in the week leading up to your session date. If rain is likely or conditions aren’t ideal, we’ll reschedule. I want you to have the beautiful golden-hour light you’ve invested in, not dark skies and stress about getting wet.
The week before your session, I’ll send an email confirming our timing and location. At that point I’ll also be checking the weather and making recommendations based on the forecast. If your goal is to be outdoors, we’ll reschedule if needed.
Why This Approach Creates Photos You’ll Actually Treasure
Traditional posed photography asks your family to act like something you’re not. A documentary family session captures something much more valuable—the real connections, the everyday moments, and the genuine personalities that make your family unique.
Years from now, you won’t remember whether everyone’s hair was perfectly styled or if the living room was spotless during your documentary family session. But you will treasure the memory of:
- How your daughter helped you bake on Saturday mornings
- The way your son giggled during bedtime stories
- That particular stage when your toddler insisted on wearing their favorite pajamas everywhere
- The freckles on their nose before they faded
- How they gripped your hand while walking
- The feeling of being together, just as you were
That’s what documentary family photography preserves… not perfection, but truth. Not performance, but presence. Not what you wished your family looked like, but the beautiful reality of who you actually are.
