Family Film or Family Photos? How to Actually Decide

If you have been going back and forth between booking family photos or a family film, you are not alone. I get asked about this all the time. 💛

So let me break down the real difference, honestly, so you can figure out which one your family actually needs right now.

What photos do best

Photos are beautiful. I will never stop taking them. I always include them, even with a film.

A photo freezes one perfect second. The matching outfits. Everyone looking at the camera. That gorgeous still moment you can frame and hang on your wall and look at every single day.

If what you want is a beautiful image to print large and put above your fireplace, photos are the answer. They are timeless and they belong in your home.

But here is what photos cannot do.

What only a film can hold onto

Photos are silent.

They cannot give you back the way your daughter says your name right now at this exact age. The way your son runs with his whole body and zero coordination. The sound of everyone laughing at the same time on a random Tuesday when nothing special is happening and everything is.

A photo shows you how they looked.

A film shows you how they were. How they moved. How they sounded. The little voice that exists only in this season before it changes into the next one. 🎬

I have had families tell me they watch their film when they are missing a stage their kids have already grown out of. They press play and it all comes rushing back. Not a memory. The actual thing.

That is the difference. Photos are for your walls. Films are for the days you need to go back in time.

A quick way to decide

Ask yourself this one question.

When your kids are grown and out of the house, what is the thing you will be most afraid you have forgotten?

If your answer is something you can see, like their little face or how small they were, photos will hold that beautifully.

But if your answer is something you can hear or feel, the sound of their laugh, the way they talked to their stuffed animals, the chaos of bedtime, the way they ran to you when you walked in the door, then you want a film. Because those things live in motion and sound, and a photo simply cannot keep them.

Most of the moms I talk to, once they really sit with that question, realize the things they are most afraid of losing are the moving, living, breathing parts. 💛

Why not both?

Honestly, this is what I recommend most of the time. And it is built right in.

Every Keepsake Family Film session includes 40 photographs along with your 4 to 5 minute film. So you are not choosing one or the other. You get the still moments for your walls AND the living, breathing film for the days you need to go back.

You walk away with both. The photo you frame above the couch and the film you cry over alone at midnight when you miss the version of your kids that only exists right now.

The thing about timing

Here is what I want you to know either way.

Whatever you choose, the most important thing is that you do it while this season is still happening.

The version of your family that exists right now will never exist again. Not the way your youngest says certain words before they learn to say them right. Not the way your kids still pile onto you without thinking. Not the way your house sounds on a regular evening with everyone in it.

This season is not the warm-up. This is the one.

How to book

I am currently opening just four Keepsake Family Film sessions for this summer. Each one includes the full film plus 40 photographs, so you do not have to choose between them.

Sessions take place in your home on Thursday afternoons, Friday mornings, and Sundays throughout July and August. I come to you. You just live your life. And I catch the version of your family that only exists right now.

Four spots across the whole summer means they fill up fast, and once they are gone they are gone until fall.

You can see exactly how it works and reserve a spot here

Or just reach out and tell me about your family. That is all it takes to start!
